How to clean a kitchen extractor fan?

First, switch the cooker hood off at the mains. Second, you will need to dismantle the extractor fan to get to the filter. The way you will dismantle it, will depend on the make and model, so be sure to check with the manufacturer’s instructions before you begin your cleaning.

Once you’ve removed the filter, you’ll be need to clean the hood and the filter separately.

For the hood and fan:
Grab the warm water and washing up liquid
Use a soft cloth and soak it in the soapy water.
Wipe the dirty areas – the washing up liquid should cut right through any grease!
For the fan area, get an old toothbrush and gently scrub the fan, making sure you get right in between those nooks and crannies.

For the filter:
Most filters, such as a metal filter or a sponge filter, can be washed in a sink of hot soapy water.

Fill your sink with hot, soapy water and Gently wash the filter using a soft cloth.
Be sure to let filters dry fully before placing them back in the hood, and remember to switch it back on at the mains.

NB: Sponge filters may need replacing after a few washes. Got a paper or carbon filter? Check the manufacturer’s recommendations to be sure you’re doing it right.
